Let’s talk front end, I don’t have a bad front end either right? Front end is all the stuff that makes the web look and feel sexy. We’re talking stuff ...like HTML, CSS and javascript.

This is your HTML (beat). This is your HTML in the browser (beat). And this is your HTML on CSS, like LSD for you webpage. Any questions?

HTML structures the content in a webpage, but CSS was created to give it a little more swag, it even stands for Cascading Style Swag. Just kidding. It’s actually Cascading Style Sheets.

HTML just isn’t that sexy by itself, so CSS makes it easy to change things like font size and color. CSS3, and HTML5 are the newest versions of HTML and CSS, and are so hot right now.

Then we’ve got Javascript. Every modern browser has javascript built in an it lets you do all kinds of cool stuff to make the web more interactive. Javascript is kind of a pain in the ass to write, so people use Javascript libraries, like jQUERY to make it easier. The javascript world is changing fast too, for two reasons. CSS3 and HTML5 are starting to do a lot of the cool ‘look and feel’ things javascript to do, and two, there’s new javascript frameworks and platforms, like Backbone and Node.js that are taking the language to the next level.

Now, you could start put all this together by yourself, but that’s reinventing the wheel. There are already frameworks and CMS systems to get a site up and running really fast. For the front end there’s HTML5 Boilerplate and Bootstrap that include all the best practice HTML, CSS and javascript. If you wanted a backend framework you can use Ruby on Rails, Django for Python and all kinds of different ones for PHP, like Yii or Zend.

Or you could use a CMS. CMS stands for Content management system. Two of the most popular ones are Wordpress and Drupal. They’re both written with PHP, but provide you pretty much everything you need out of the box to make a simple website with only a little knowledge of HTML, CSS and PHP.

Just explore your options, there’s always something out there to make your life easier. Easy is good. Remember, great programmers are lazy and never do more work than is necessary.

Before we get too far into the details, let's talk about where you stick your CSS.

CSS is all about separating content from presentation. Take me for example, my hotness is ...my presentation, or the CSS, my personality, is the content, the HTML. When you put together great content and great presentation you end up with a pretty bangin' website, or this hotness.

First, the best practice way to add CSS to a web page is to create a separate CSS file, or an external stylesheet. Let's take a look at the site directory on our desktop. Inside is an HTML file and a CSS file. If we open the HTML file in a browser we see it is just plain text. Let's open the HTML file in a text editor. Ok, so what we have to do is add the stylesheet to the HTML file with this line, link—rel-stylesheet then, href—equals—the the CSS file path within the site directory.

Let's go back and refresh the page. Since we linked the CSS file, now the browser applies the external CSS and the content is styled. This method works great because one file can be applied to many pages.

But, if you like it quick and dirty, there are two other ways to add CSS. First, is an inline style where you add the style directly to an HTML element in the page. Let's add a background color of gray. Inline styles aren't good because it forces you to edit each page individually to change the style. This is known as tight coupling, and let me tell you, as good as that sounds, it isn't.

Second is an internal style. You stick this right in the page, inside the head element. You add the style tag and then some CSS. Let's make the paragraphs bold, by adding a p then font-weight, bold.

This method is slightly better than inline styling, but you still have the same problems, it's attached to one HTML file.

In conclusion, external stylesheets are good because they can be applied to many HTML files and on a more advanced level it helps make page loads faster because once the browser loads this file, it remembers it and doesn't have to download it again. This is called browser caching.

Next we'll talk about properties, specifically color and size options, and it might be a little hotter in here, if you know what I mean.

You've made it this far, now shit gets real.

The whole point of HTML is to give your content structure, but when used in conjunction ...with CSS it helps layout your page. Two useful tags for layout are the div and span tags. They are generic tags useful for laying out content. If we think of different HTML tags like different kinds of cases, an anchor tag would be a guitar case, perfectly designed for what it holds. A paragraph tag would be a shoe box, useful for stacking and organizing. Whereas a div tag would be a big cardboard box. Immensely useful, but has its drawbacks. You might remember what’s inside if you label it, but a lot of junk can get thrown in. Span tags are like plastic wrap. They don’t hide, or change the shape of what they’re holding at all.

Divs are used a lot in web design, mostly to enclose a bunch of HTML and then give that area an id or class attribute. Those can both be used as selectors to apply some CSS.

Spans are used for smaller bits of html, and they are “in-line”, while divs are block level elements. Which basically means it separates itself from the content above and below it, while the span acts like nothing happened and things go on as usual. Like this:

It’s been common practice to use divs to create a page layout, where you add id’s to divide elements on the page, like header, content, and navigation menus. But it’s still just a bunch of divs at the end of the day. In HTML 5, semantic tags were introduced to help create layouts with more meaning. It’s like when a girls says something, but you don't really know what she means, that’s how it used to be with divs. But now, with HTML 5, you know tags mean what they say. Don’t you wish girls were like that?

For example, in HTML 5 there is a header tag, which would replace something like div with an id attribute of header. A few more new tags are nav, section, aside, footer and more. We’ll list them below.

If your HTML page starts to get big you’ll want to leave a comment. Especially for where tags end. To leave a comment, start with an angle bracket, then an exclamation point, then two hyphens, the comment, and then the first part in reverse.

Comments are a good habit to get into, you know, like showering daily, and watching code babes videos.

If you really want to get into laying out a page you'll need to learn some CSS, but we wanted to give you a quick overview.
